Start with a defined use case

Write down the people, tasks and constraints the choice must serve. A useful comparison makes its selection method visible and describes the circumstances in which an option may not be suitable.

A practical comparison matrix

Criterion Question to investigate
Fit Does the option solve the intended problem?
Cost Which ongoing and setup costs apply?
Support How will exceptions be resolved?
Flexibility Can your needs change without a difficult transition?
Evidence What source or test supports the claim?

Publish the limits alongside the result
